Browser phone

The web client is also a phone. After you sign in, the softphone dock sits at the bottom of every page. You can dial, answer and talk without installing anything. Your browser phone registers by itself when you sign in, and it keeps the call when you move between pages.

Before you call

  • Use the address your company gave you, with https://. The browser phone refuses to connect without a secure connection.
  • Allow the microphone when the browser asks. If it was refused, the dock says why, for example that no microphone was found or that the browser is busy with another call. Only one browser tab can hold the phone at a time.
  • Check the audio settings in the dock: microphone, speaker, echo cancellation and noise suppression. The microphone test shows whether your voice reaches the phone.

Making a call

  1. Open the dock and type a number or an extension on the dialpad. A colleague's extension is enough for an internal call.
  2. Press the call button.
  3. The status shows requested, trying, ringing and connected.

To call an outside number, dial it as you normally would for your company. Your administrator's outbound rules decide which trunk carries it.

During a call

ControlWhat it does
MuteTurns your microphone off. Nobody else hears a change.
Hold / ResumePuts the call on hold with music. A call on hold does not carry keypad tones.
KeypadSends touch tones, for voice menus and bank lines.
Transfer, nowSends the call to another number. The caller is connected to the target and you leave. If the transfer fails, the call goes on.
Transfer after talkingHolds the call, calls the target, talks to them first, then connects the two calls.
Add callHolds the call and dials a second call. If the second call fails before it is answered, the first call comes back by itself.
SwapMoves between the two calls.
Hang upEnds the call you are on.

The dock shows a remote hold, so you know when the other side has put you on hold.

Call waiting

A second incoming call rings over a call you are already on. Answer it to put the first call on hold, or decline it. You can have at most two calls at a time. A third call gets a busy signal.

Park and pickup

Parking leaves a call in a numbered slot so anyone can pick it up. The codes are set by your administrator. The defaults are:

  • park the call you are on at slot 0 to 9: dial *00 to *09;
  • take the oldest call parked in a slot: dial *10 to *19;
  • take a call that is ringing a colleague's extension: dial *20* and the extension.

The dock has a Park and pickup section in the idle state, so you do not need to remember the codes. See Transfer, park and pickup.

Incoming calls

An incoming call opens the dock by itself with the caller's number and name where known. Answer, or decline. If your status sends the call elsewhere, the call never rings you. See statuses and forwarding.

Mobile and desktop apps

The source of the MonoPhone apps (Android, iOS, Windows and macOS) is in the repository. They are not yet published for download. When they are, an app gets its credentials from a QR code that the web client shows. The code works once and is valid for 10 minutes. The app then keeps its own credentials, so the web sign-in is not needed for calls.

If something is wrong

  • The dock says reconnecting. The phone reconnects by itself. Calls that are already up stay up while it does.
  • Calls ring but you hear nothing. Check the speaker and the microphone test. Ask your administrator to check the company's media ports.
  • A transfer fails with 403, 404 or "busy". The dock shows the reason in words. Try the other number, or ask a colleague.
